Vinod's story

Finance, India
Just like a family, we really bond with each other

I’m Vinod Shah and I am a Chartered Accountant. At APL Logistics in Mumbai, India I have been the Finance Controller since 2015. This basically means I am responsible for all finance operations and supplying management with requisite information for making the right business decisions. I first joined the Group in 2007 after Indian Railways had just allowed companies to have a railway license to operate trains in India. At the same time, APL Group had just initiated for a new venture called India Infrastructure Logistics. This gave me the boost I needed to join. I really wanted to grow in a start-up environment.

We are still growing

When we first started operating as a subsidiary of APL Logistics, I was looking after the financial side of things from day one. There was a lot of activities to be done, which was mainly arranging finance, the capitalisation of all assets, and acquiring of land, amongst many other things including operations.

I was also involved in business interactions to develop and make business decisions, which gave me the opportunity to work closely with the MD locally and Senior management in Singapore at that time. It was basically finance participating in business decisions. I’m extremely happy to be involved with and was able to get through all of that and grow with the company to what it is today.

It’s everything I love

A reason why I am still at this company today is because everyone here really bond with each other like a family. I believe the management here has played a vital role in that. When leadership is stable, they provide a stabilizing influence on others so they can truly be themselves. They are leaders you can trust to grow with.

The working environment here has always been good in a way that I’ve always felt secure. As long as you’re giving your best to deliver your work, you’ll have no problem feeling secure here. To bring everyone closer together, HR has also organised picnics together and team events such as MasterChef.

Keeping it real

I manage around 17 people across India and I believe my way of working is effective. Instead of acting like a typical leader telling people what to do, I interact more as a team player showing them what and how to do it. I do my best to find out their problems and they know I will always help them as and when it’s required.

Management has always been supportive throughout my journey, and I want to be there for my team. As long as they are honest with the job, my door is always open. They don’t have to be the most skilful or experienced. Overall, I believe the skills and knowledge will improve over time.
